Part of the Modderfontein estate is something called the Modderfontein reserve. It's open to the public for hiking, running, cycling and picnicking. So we went hiking. Small problem, we didn't have a map. With the help from the notice board and a volunteer ranger we got sorted out and went on our way.
First upstream, following the course of the river and crossing over just behind the dam. Walking was easy, no major ups or downs and the path is well marked. The first stop was one of those granite outcrops.
Further along we got to an abandoned explosives store, remember Modderfontein was and is an explosives factory. These stores are dotted all over the area, each store is only allowed a certain number of tons of explosives and they have to be far enough from each other in order not to have a chain reaction in case one of them blows up. The walls are formidable, we measured ca. 3m at the base and shaped such that the blast is directed up-wards.
At dam 4 we changed direction and went back to our starting point at Fish-eagle dam, yes, we did hear the cry of a fish-eagle.
